NTC Promenade

An Historic Showcase

A partnership with architects Roesling Nakamura Terada, Architects, master developer The Corky McMillin Companies and the City of San Diego Redevelopment Agency has led to innovative adaptive reuse of the historic buildings and grounds while preserving the historic and architectural integrity established in the Naval Training Center Precise Plan and the Guidelines for the Treatment of Historic Properties.

“The design principles that guide this restoration include using creativity and care that respect the legacy of the Naval Training Center while encouraging discovery and experiences for all ages and users,” explained Ralph Roesling, Principal, Roesling Nakamura Terada Architects.

Historic ParadeBUILDING ON A LEGACY

All 26 NTC Promenade buildings are within the NTC Historic District, which is listed on the National Register of Historic Places. In respect for Navy history, NTC Promenade will keep the building numbers which reflect the order they were built. The following six buildings and three outdoor plazas are slated for Phase 1.

DANCE PLACE SAN DIEGO – Building 175

Phase 1 will include San Diego’s largest location devoted entirely to dance - complete with rehearsal, studio, office and retail space, a café and dance schools. Having a central locale combined with the collaborative nature of sharing space, ideas and creativity will strengthen San Diego’s well-respected dance community. “The significance of this for the dance community is unparalleled,” said John Malashock, whose Malashock Dance will be among the four companies in residence. “The ability to have an affordable permanent home combined with the inherent collaborative nature of sharing a building will strengthen our dance community more than we can imagine.”

MUSIC PLACE SAN DIEGO – Building 176

Mirroring Building 175 in size, history and approach, this former classroom building will become the new home for several diverse San Diego music groups. From symphonic music, to African drum beats to the sound of brass, Music Place San Diego will come alive through its use as rehearsal, classroom, workshop and performance space. An open environment will welcome the public to view rehearsals in progress.

COMMAND CENTER – Building 200

The original NTC Commander’s Headquarters will be transformed into a state-of-the-art conference and meeting center that respects the historic character and nautical decor. An engaging and interactive exhibit will showcase the legacy of the Naval Training Center - its history and significance - and will provide a window into its mission and the impact on individuals who came aboard and left as sailors. The beautiful historic rose gardens will be brought back to glory and provide a scenic gateway to Legacy Plazas and Luce Court.

THE LIBRARY – Building 177

The former Library will be magically transformed into San Diego’s newest event venue versatile enough for special events, receptions, reunions and exhibitions. The bright and airy Library will accommodate groups up to 500 and is complete with banquet capabilities for any occasion or special event.

BUILDINGS 201 and 202

Identical two-story office buildings flanking the Command Center will provide a home to San Diego non-profits looking for affordable rent in a collaborative and innovative setting. Groups representing Environmental Science, Recreation, Education, Visual and Multi-Disciplinary Arts and Youth Leadership will serve their audiences and the community in this dynamic and historic new setting featuring rooftop decks overlooking the Promenade.
